The sympathetic division is the part of the autonomic nervous system whose preganglionic nerve fibers arise mainly from the spinal cord between the upper thoracic and lower lumbar levels. These fibers leave the central nervous system and travel to autonomic ganglia, especially the paravertebral ganglia, where they may form connections or continue onward to prevertebral ganglia.
