drug dependence Drug dependence is a mental, and sometimes physical, state that develops through interaction with a drug and is marked by a strong drive to keep taking it regularly or from time to time for its psychological effects or to avoid discomfort when it is not available.

Tolerance may be present or absent, and dependence can involve more than one drug.
